National Teacher Appreciation Week
May 4-10, 2008
"Great Teachers Make Great Public Schools"

Celebrate Southwood Teachers during
National Teacher Appreciation Week

Also remember the special teachers children see all year:
Music, Band, Art, P.E., Reading, GT, ESOL, Librarian and Speech teachers.
These teachers are invaluable to our school and also deserve our thanks.

Monday, May 5, 2008 - Theme: Healthy Start Because We Care
(Fruity Day)

  • Students are encouraged to bring a piece of fruit to their teachers to give them a healthy start for the week.
  • PTA will organize muffins and coffee to be available for all staff first thing in the morning. Volunteers needed to provide muffins and coffee and to set up before teachers arrive.

Tuesday, May 6, 2008 - Theme: You Make This World a Brighter Place
(Inspirational Day)

  • Students write notes or make cards for their teachers to let them know how much they are cared about and appreciated.

Wednesday, May 7, 2008 - Theme: You Are a Jewel
(Royalty Day)

Thursday, May 8, 2008 - Theme: How Your Garden Grows
(Flowery Day)

  • Students are encouraged to be creative -- bring a flower, color a flower, make one out of tissue paper -- whatever they like.

Friday, May 9, 2008 - Theme: A Star in Our Eyes
(Treat Day)

  • Students are encouraged to bring a small treat for their teacher with a note (Example: Extra Gum -- "Thanks for going the EXTRA mile," Forget Me Not flower seed packet -- "You are an unforgettable teacher," a Hershey kiss -- "To remind you that you are loved"), children artwork appreciating their teacher or a note just telling them how much of a Treat it has been having them as their teacher

Every young mind needs a spark to light the way to a brighter future through learning-and teachers are that spark. In 1984, National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week-the first full week in May-to honor the dedicated men and women who lend their passion and skills to educating our children. I encourage you and your PTA to recognize all of the ways teachers contribute to the lives of children. During this special week, help National PTA and its nearly 6 million members show teachers the appreciation they so richly deserve. Teachers, in partnership with parents, truly make a difference.

—Anna Weselak, PTA National President
